DR. DAVID R. AND MRS. SARA K. FANNIN
As a longtime faculty member and founder of the Freshman Engineering Program at the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri S&T), Dr. David R. Fannin mentored generations of aspiring engineers. Now, Dr. Fannin and his wife, Sara K. Fannin, have generously chosen to deepen their legacy at Missouri S&T by establishing the Fannin Freshman Engineering Scholarship Endowment.
Dr. Fannin joined the University of Missouri-Rolla after earning his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University. Following10 years of service as a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering Department, he was named Assistant Dean and then Associate Dean of Engineering for Undergraduate Affairs.
In this leadership capacity, Dr. Fannin and a colleague designed and founded the University’s Freshman Engineering Program, one of the earliest, comprehensive advising programs for engineering education in the nation. As the program director for 19 years, Dr. Fannin provided entering freshman with advising and mentoring opportunities critical to their undergraduate success.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Fannin also mentored the University’s first woman Ph.D.in engineering, co-authored two textbooks and was honored with 13 Outstanding Teaching Awards. The Freshman Engineering Program he led for two decades was honored by the National Academic Advising Association.
Now, through the generosity of David and Sara Fannin, the Fannin Freshman Engineering Scholarship Endowment will provide financial support for aspiring engineers for generations to come.
