Karen Squires Foelsch
Through her leadership and generosity as a proud alumna, Karen Squires Foelsch (BSCSci’89, Professional Degree CSci’10) continues to make a lasting contribution to the advancement of Missouri University of Science and Technology, providing academic opportunity for talented students, supporting faculty excellence, and raising the profile of the university as one of the nation’s leading technological research institutions.
A past president of the Missouri S&T Computer Science Academy who continues to serve on the Academy’s board of directors, Karen has worked with faculty and her fellow alumni to advance the department’s curriculum, resources and industry partnerships. As members of the Order of the Golden Shillelagh, Karen and her husband, Paul, are among the university’s most loyal and generous donors, having provided financial contributions for many years in support of the Department of Computer Science and its students.
With this gift, Karen has stepped forward again, generously choosing to establish the Karen Squires Foelsch Computer Science Endowment in support of scholarships, equipment or faculty support.
Karen presently serves as a senior executive for Pearson, a leading educational publishing and assessment services company. As Senior Vice President in the company’s Assessment & Information group, she oversees business development, business processes, financial management, and contracts and statements of work for a $100 million shared services function.
Over the past decade, Karen has held many leadership positions focused on building Pearson’s Assessment and Information group. She previously served as the Director of IT Services for Pearson, leading a 125-person IT services group supporting three business units encompassing 1,500 employees, five locations and $350 million in annual revenue.
Prior to joining Pearson, Karen worked for St. Louis-based Monsanto Company for 13 years, serving in a number of leadership positions including systems programmer, information center analyst, senior information systems auditor, site management information systems manager, information technology team leader and manager of IT security.
The first person in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree, Karen grew up as an “Army brat,” moving 16 times by the age of 16. She began her schooling as a community college student and transferred to Missouri S&T with enough money for one semester. Through the cooperative education program, she worked as an end user consultant and systems programmer, graduating with no debt. In addition to her degrees from Missouri S&T, Karen holds an Executive MBA from Washington University in St. Louis and has completed graduate work toward a master’s degree in educational measurement and statistics from the University of Iowa.
Karen, Paul and their daughter, Marissa, live in Iowa City, Iowa, where they are active in the community. Karen was the founding president of the Greater Iowa City Area Chapter of Dollars for Scholars and is a current member of the board of directors.
Now, through the permanent source of funding provided by the Karen Squires Foelsch Computer Science Endowment, future business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators in computer science, information technology and management information systems will benefit from the scholarships, resources, and mentoring made possible by the donor’s vision and generosity.
