The Mary Montoya Memorial Scholarship recognizes Mary Montoya as a mother and mentor to her children and her dedication to her children’s education. She always dreamed of graduating from college, but instead dedicated her life to her faith, her family and raising her children. Mary worked tirelessly as a mother, role model and mentor to ensure her five children had the opportunity to attend college by working with them throughout their school years and by stressing the importance of education and hard work.
Mary was an avid reader, was bilingual and loved music. She was a choir director at several churches throughout her life and played the piano, organ and saxophone. While she loved the arts, she had immense knowledge of international affairs, mathematical problem solving and scientific theory. She passed away at age 55 in September 1991, but her commitment to her children’s education never wavered.
This scholarship is established by her daughter, Cynthia L. Schwartz and son-in-law, Robert W. Schwartz, a faculty member and administrator at Missouri S&T. The recipient of the scholarship is encouraged to always do their best and to seek out opportunities to learn and grow personally and professionally.
