Nidec Motor Corporation
As one of Missouri S&T’s outstanding industry partners, Nidec Motor Corporation has contributed to the advancement of the university in many ways: recruiting graduates, investing in research and technology transfer, and providing financial support for students, programs and services.
A leading manufacturer of industrial, commercial, and residential motors for more than a century, the company originated as United States Electrical Manufacturing, a Los Angeles-based plant with 17 employees. The company was the first to manufacture electric fans in the United States. In 1962, Emerson Electric Company based in St. Louis acquired the company, began to recruit Missouri S&T graduates, and diversified the product line over the next half century.
In 2010, Nidec Corporation bought the motors and controls division of Emerson Electric and formed Nidec Motor Corporation, which continues to be headquartered in St. Louis. Today the company manufactures high efficiency motors for use in water treatment, mining, power generation, air conditioning condensers, rooftop cooling towers and commercial refrigeration, as well as motors, controls and switches for the automotive market.
Now, in affirmation of its partnership with Missouri S&T, Nidec Motor Corporation has chosen to establish a permanent source of scholarship support for undergraduate students in any discipline, with preference given to African Americans. In keeping with the donor’s wishes, the Nidec Motor Corporation Endowed Scholarship will provide the innovators, pioneers and leaders of the future with the opportunity to pursue their hopes and dreams at Missouri S&T.
